The Rich History of BIPOC & Immigrant Comedians From The Pacific North West .


Seattle has a rich history of stand-up comedy, dating back to the 1970s when the city’s first comedy club, The Comedy Underground, opened its doors. Since then, the city has become a hub for comedy, with a thriving scene that has produced many talented comedians.


One of the most notable comedians to come out of Seattle is Joel McHale. McHale was born in Rome, Italy, but grew up in Seattle, where he attended the University of Washington. He began his career in comedy as a member of the university’s improv group, and later went on to perform stand-up comedy at The Comedy Underground. McHale is best known for his role as Jeff Winger on the TV series "Community" and as the host of "The Soup" on E!.

Another successful comedian to come out of Seattle is Hari Kondabolu. Kondabolu was born and raised in Queens, New York, but moved to Seattle in the early 2000s to pursue a career in comedy. He quickly became a fixture in the city’s comedy scene, performing at local clubs and festivals. Kondabolu is known for his socially conscious and politically charged stand-up, as well as his work as a writer and producer on shows like "Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell" and "The Problem with Apu".



Seattle has also produced several talented Black comedians, including Quincy Jones and Nate Jackson. Jones, who was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2015, gained national attention after appearing on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show", where he was surprised with the news that HBO would be producing a special featuring his stand-up. The special, "Burning the Light", premiered on the network in 2016. Nate Jackson, who was born and raised in Seattle, has also made a name for himself in the comedy world, touring nationally and appearing on shows like "Last Comic Standing" and "Def Comedy Jam".





In addition to Black comedians, Seattle has also been a breeding ground for talented BIPOC comedians. One such comedian is Dwayne Kennedy, who was born in Chicago but moved to Seattle in the 1990s. Kennedy has since become a nationally recognized stand-up comedian, appearing on shows like "The Late Show with David Letterman" and "Comedy Central Presents". Another notable BIPOC comedian from Seattle is Ron Funches. Funches, who was born in California but grew up in Portland, Oregon, began his comedy career in Seattle and has since become a successful actor, appearing on shows like "Undateable" and "Powerless".


Seattle has also produced several talented Asian comedians, including Jo Koy and K-von. Jo Koy, who was born in Tacoma, Washington, is of Filipino descent and has become one of the most successful Asian-American comedians in the country. He has released several stand-up specials and has appeared on shows like "Chelsea Lately" and "The Adam Carolla Show". K-von, who was born in Oregon but grew up in Seattle, is of Iranian descent and has gained a following for his clean, family-friendly comedy.

There are several African comedians who have made it from Washington State. One such comedian is David Njeri, who was born and raised in Kenya but moved to Seattle in the early 2000s. He quickly became a fixture in the city's comedy scene, performing at local clubs and festivals. Njeri is known for his witty and observational comedy, which often centers on his experiences as an immigrant in the United States.


Another successful African comedian from Washington State is Ahmed Ahmed, who was born in Egypt but grew up in California. Ahmed got his start in stand-up comedy in Seattle in the early 1990s and quickly gained a following for his irreverent and politically charged humor. He has since gone on to achieve international success, appearing on shows like "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" and "The Late Show with David Letterman".


Another successful African comedian from Seattle is Dubai Denis  Maronga Formerly known as General Mutombo, Who was born in Nairobi, Kenya but got his start in stand-up comedy in Wichita, Kansas in 2016 . He has since gone on to achieve success by doing a country wide tour (The African Princes Of Comedy) and has been the host for the biggest Black and African art festivals In Seattle (Madaraka  festival, Umoja festival, Refugee & Immigrant festival, MOPOP Black comedy festivals & more appearing in yahoo finance, CNN and BBC Africa . Dubai has won AAA the best comedian of the year 2019 - 2021 . Dubai Denis is also a Media entrepreneur and the CEO of Kicheko Factory Non-Profit based in Seattle, WA. 



Seattle has also produced several other talented African comedians, including Eman Morgan and Yogi Paliwal. Eman Morgan, who was born and raised in Ethiopia, began his comedy career in Seattle in the early 2000s and has since become a nationally recognized stand-up comedian, performing at clubs and festivals across the country. Yogi Paliwal, who was born in India but raised in Seattle, is known for his unique blend of storytelling and observational humor, which often centers on his experiences as a first-generation immigrant.

 


In conclusion, the Seattle comedy scene has a rich history and has produced many talented comedians from diverse backgrounds, including Black, BIPOC, and Asian comedians. From the early days of The Comedy Underground to the present day, Seattle has been a hub for comedy and a breeding ground for new talent. The city's vibrant comedy scene has helped to launch the careers of many successful comedians, who have gone on to achieve national and international fame. As the scene continues to evolve, it will undoubtedly produce more talented comedians who will make their mark on the world of comedy.
